Features

Thanks to its recent update, ZenMate is now full to the brim with useful features making it a great choice for most VPN users all over the world.

Privacy should be at the heart of any decent VPN and ZenMate does this exceptionally well, keeping your real IP address fully encrypted and hidden at all times. They also use a range of VPN protocols to ensure your connection is fast and totally secure.

With over 2,200 servers in 30+ countries, users from around the globe can secure their internet connection wherever they may be.

Streaming with ZenMate is now much easier thanks to its dedicated servers for the likes of US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, YouTube and many other popular channels, and P2P file sharing users will also be happy with their newly released dedicated torrenting servers.

Their refreshed app is easier than ever to use and has been streamlined to make it super user friendly. With the inclusion of a quick connect button, users can get protected to the recommended best server for them in a matter of seconds, and the addition of a ‘favourites’ section is also a nice new addition.

Finally with this update, the app now smartly alerts you with a push message when you’re about to connect to an unsecure public wi-fi connection, even when the VPN isn’t turned on.

Platforms and devices

ZenMate has been designed as a one stop solution working exceptionally well on a huge range of devices and operating systems. ZenMate generously lets you protect up to 5 devices with just the one account ensuring you are fully protected whether at home, on the move or travelling abroad.

Their user-friendly apps can be installed on macOS, Windows and Linux operating systems as well as iOS and Android mobile devices. If using a Fire TV (Amazon Firestick) or Kodi is your thing… they’ve got you covered too, as well as Chrome and Firefox browser users. It’s also easy enough to configure your home router and protect your entire wi-fi network with a ZenMate VPN.

Streaming

ZenMate has majorly upped its game to accommodate streamers and is now an ideal choice if you want to use a VPN for this purpose. You can unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other popular streaming services with ease. A great deal of Netflix content is geo-restricted to the US and of course BBC iPlayer can only be viewed in the UK. ZenMate will effectively lift any blocks on Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO, Hulu, ESPN and many more What we love about ZenMate is they have dedicated servers just for this purpose, making the whole process extremely simple for you, its user. All you need to do is simply select the server optimised for Netflix etc and you’re good to go!

Torrenting

ZenMate is an ideal choice for users who want the protection of a VPN when torrenting with P2P file sharing permitted on all of servers. Users will benefit from great speeds and unlimited bandwidth whilst concealing activity from their ISPs, making activity slick and simple.

There is one minor issue worth highlighting with ZenMate; torrenting isn’t permitted on North American servers due to strict copyright laws. However, you can still use ZenMate for torrenting on a whole range of European and other servers. Stay safe online and remember, you should always use a secure VPN when torrenting!

Speed

ZenMate offers some of the very best up/download speeds around, with speeds of up to 255Mbps achieved locally during testing from our UK offices, they are a match for any of the competing top providers. Their user-friendly apps will automatically suggest the quickest and least congested server based on your location, so they take care of the hard part for you!

Local speeds are generally outstanding, but on occasion, if you’re connecting to something further afield, performance can drop off slightly. If you are connecting from the UK to a USA server for instance, expect speeds around ZenMate’s global average of 62Mbps which is more than sufficient to stream HD content.

ZenMate is also an obvious choice for P2P users with hugely respectable and consistently fast upload speeds as well as online gamers.

Security

ZenMate offer its users a very secure and privacy focussed platform ensuring IP addresses are hidden from prying eyes at all times behind industry standard AES-256 unbreakable encryption. They offer a suite of great VPN protocols depending on the device you are using and our preferred OpenVPN features alongside IKev2 and L2TP, offering the best balance of security and speed. Additional security features include DNS leak protection, first-party DNS & IPV6 leak blocking, and also the must have (in our view) VPN kill switch which guarantee’s your IP address or activity won’t be leaked in the event your ZenMate VPN loses connection.

Applications

The new ZenMate app is a joy to use across all platforms and devices. It’s one of the slickest and most stripped back we have seen and it’s clear that ZenMate have majorly upped their game to make this super user friendly.

Not only can you select the best dedicated servers for torrenting and streaming your favourite channels including Netflix, iPlayer etc, the app has ‘one click VPN connection’ which will connect you the nearest and fastest available server.

The apps also smartly alert you when you are connecting to public or unsecured wi-fi, reminding you to turn on before any of your personal data is potentially compromised.

Customer service

ZenMate’s website has a useful help section so you can be sure to get the most out of your VPN. Whether you are struggling setting up on a particular device, want to know how to use specific features included in the app or simply have a generic ‘problem’… there is plenty of information available.

You can also contact their helpful customer service team through the contact from found on the website. During testing, our email correspondences were sent over both quickly and politely so that’s a gold star for them there. However, they currently offer no 24/7 live chat support to we almost want to take away that nice shiny star! Hopefully they’ll add this must have feature in the not so distant future.

Log policy

ZenMate is a zero logs VPN and wont store or record any of your browsing or online communications. Simply put they offer “complete anonymity… and never to keep logs of our users activity”.

It’s worth noting that their apps do collect ‘anonymous statistics’ which is data that is impossible to link back to any individual, but this can be turned off in the settings menu if you’re keen on ultimate privacy.

We are happy to agree that ZenMate are a no log VPN provider and believe that should any third-party data request come in, we’re confident they wouldn’t have any user data to hand over.

Jurisdiction

ZenMate operates from Berlin, Germany, which isn’t the most ideal for any VPN provider due to them being subject to EU data retention laws. But that said, with their super-secure zero logs policy, we aren’t overly concerned by this and should they be requested to hand over any data, we’re confident they would have nothing to give.

The verdict

ZenMate has drastically improved its already impressive product and doesn’t fall short in any of the key areas making it a superb all-round pick! It also currently sits as one of if not the cheapest VPNs currently available at only $21 for 12 months protection making it hard not to consider if you’re in the market for a VPN!

User privacy is assured thanks to its array of enhanced features, multiple VPN protocols and military grade encryption coupled with its strong zero logs policy.

Torrenting and streaming is also well covered and easier than ever thanks to their new dedicated servers that unblock Netflix, iPlayer and many popular channels found across all their super user-friendly applications.

Melvyn and the team at comparemyvpn.com rate ZenMate highly, and all things considered; you’re not going to find much better value out there right now than what ZenMate are offering for such a low entry price.

Have your say...
