Major VPN providers join forces to improve standards

Last updated on 18/02/2020 by Melvyn and co.

The VPN Trust Initiative recently formed

The Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) has recently formed the VPN Trust Initiative aimed at “improving digital standards across the industry” with many of CompareMyVPNs major partners joining forces to work in this collaboration. The aim is simple… to improve digital safety for consumers by building understanding, strengthening trust and mitigating risk for all VPN users.

This collaborative and member lead organisation is an ideal platform for rival VPN companies to join together for the greater purpose of improving user online safety and global digital privacy.

Some of the biggest names are involved and include but are not limited to: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, VyprVPN, StrongVPN, IPVanish, SaferVPN as well as NetProtect, WLVPN and SugarSync.

The VPN market is growing rapidly both in terms of users and market value and the i2coalliton report that by 2022, the VPN market will exceed $35 billion. Individuals and businesses are increasingly turning to VPNs for online freedom and increased anonymity, as well as removing geographical barriers for accessing content and bypassing restrictions (a VPN will encrypt any online activity and hide the users IP address). However, some VPNs do not conform to such high standards resulting in many users online activity being leaked and placed at risk.

The VPN Trust Initiative aims to:

  • Define VPN best practices
  • Design and reinforce industry standards
  • Provide accurate information to government officials and policy makers
  • Promote appropriate industry-led regulations
  • Inform the wider technology industry

Commenting about the launch, co-founder of i2Coalition Christian Dawson said: “VPNs are a foundational technology for a safer internet, so it’s important that VPN providers adhere to best practices. However, it’s also important that new legislation doesn’t inadvertently limit the effectiveness of VPNs… This initiative offers a vital and unique opportunity for the industry to come together as a collective and spearhead real awareness, education, and progress.”

VPNs can seem complex to the beginner so it’s vital that unsuspecting users do not use services that cannot be trusted, with many free VPNs providers disregarding user safety (and in worst cases… logging and selling user data to third parties!).

Our experts spend a tireless number of hours researching and investigating providers and handpick the best VPNs that deliver best in class standards for user privacy and data handling. The team here at CompareMyVPN.com are pleased to see some of our major partners working to unify standards and promote best practice for all VPN users going forward.
